Having visited both the state archives and a prison this week, I would say the prison was less onerous and more welcoming.

It's easy to be dazzled by the State Capitol next door, but don't overlook the Texas State Library and Archives building. From the imposing front doors with emblems of Texas and the inspiring quotes carved into the building's exterior, you enter a recently restored and beautiful, ornate entry area, with important historical documents and items featured in the foyer. An extensive photo and book collection is readily available, with seating if you want to research. A real gem.

Enjohed learning more about this wonderful library. Very helpful. Enjoyed the Cabinet of Curiosities in the lobby a rotating selection of archives. We saw a pen that President Rooselvelt used and the gavel made from wood from Davy Crockett's home. Fascinating.

A jewel of Texas. The staff are dedicated, professional and incredibly knowledgeable. They are jewels of this state, as well, and unsung heroes of information science for our state. Any library in Texas has TexShare online databases, thanks to the Texas State Library, which provides everyone with unbelievable access to information that would cost thousands of dollars to subscribe to.

Staff is very nice but unless you are going to do research in the archives there is not much else to do here. the research center does have usel of their computers and paper archives if that is what you are interested in but as tourist stop, probably a waste of time.
