my experience is based on a rather short visit - but it was very positive. The library is very impressive in terms of size and design - 4 levels, lots of space and big windows offering daylight and great views (from the upper floors). The ground level is the busiest, and many of the customers appear to be unhoused folks, who need a safe space to warm up, use computers or just chill… and I can imagine probably not all library customers are happy about it, but this is a public library and it welcomes all.
the farther up you go, the quieter it gets, but it is not a super quiet place by all means. I didn’t find signs indicating that there are “quiet study areas.” I actually heard one customer complaining about noise and distractions, but they were seated close to the stairs and there was quite a lot of foot traffic. I am sure there were quieter spots on the floor. I was really impressed with the library policy that allows eating snacks but not hot food or meals (drinks are also allowed) on the ground floor, and no drinks or food allowed on upper levels (although I saw somebody eating sneakily on the 4th floor lol). I think it is very smart and reasonable. I live in a city where everything goes in libraries, and people bring huge take out packages, pizza, French fries, hot wings, etc, and it gets really stuffy there, not to mention the garbage left behind and smells that linger for hours because windows can’t be opened, sticky tables, spilled coffee… Anyways, the central location of HPL is really neat and clean - and offers lots of tables and chairs. I was quite intrigued how few books there are - some shelves were half empty - not sure whether they just have much more shelving that they need or they weed very intensively - most of libraries I have visited have shelves 75 - 90% full (or even 100% - which is not great)- in this one I saw shelves that were more than half empty. Maybe this is their approach and understanding of library aesthetics.
anyways, I really liked the place, its design and decor. It appears that they offer many programs for all age groups, with a wide range of interests, and include programs for newcomers. I didn’t interact with staff, so I can’t say much about them - although I’ve noticed one library employee seated at the information desk who had large (looking like noise cancelling) headphones covering their ears - not sure what was the deal, but this person definitely didn’t appear approachable.
there are washrooms on all floors, and the one I used was very clean and well stocked.
The security guards I saw were actually focused on their tasks - like the lady by the main door who was looking up at the people entering the building, her face not buried in her cellphone, like I saw in other library systems) - or another guard who was doing rounds, washroom checks, etc.
Overall I’ve had a really good experience there.

The staff is amazing and so is everything else. Great place to study. Not the greatest place to bring kids as I found a guy hitting his pipe(taking hard drugs) in the small washroom closest to the kids section. Security is there and very helpful but still, not the kind of exposure you want to give your children.

The Hamilton Central Library is one of my favorite places in Hamilton. A great selection of books DVDs and other material. The staff is always friendly and very helpful. They hosted us as a poll location during 3 recent elections. The staff and security personnel were very helpful and friendly.

Very poor experience. I went to have some silent environment so I can concentrate on my task. But there is no silent zone for use a computer. Library is not even sound proof, people talking around , snizing coughing all their sounds are reflecting. No printer available for print.

I typically frequent Toronto Public Libraries but stopped by this area during a work trip and thoroughly enjoyed the few hours I spent here. Despite Jackson Square not being the most attractive, this library boasts friendly staff and ample space by the windows that is really perfect for studying/working.
